June 2024 on Glitch: Lucky and lingering

One of the things I love most about this time of year is the opportunity to take a break. Even if it’s not a weeklong vacation, or a full weekend, something about the heat and this time of year tells my body in so many ways to slow down. Take the nap. Notice the trees. I’ve even taken what I used to interpret as delays and annoyances to my go-go-go routine, as an opportunity to pause what I’m doing and be grateful for a moment to myself.

As my pal Jenn Schiffer often quotes, “everyday is a winding road,” but I’m here to tell you to look for opportunities to enjoy the ride, and you’ll find them. Especially if you search the Glitch community!

Before we get into the treats and treasures created last month, June was a somewhat busy month at Glitch and Fastly! Sue Smith showed us how to deliver your site through Fastly (and all the perks that come with it) and also somehow found the time to build an example of how you can use Glitch for learning!

We also made a couple of big announcements about how you can add external sites to your Glitch profile if you have Glitch Pro, and how everyone should snatch up a free developer account with Fastly! If you missed our keynote last month, not to worry, you can watch the video below.

💎 The Jewels of June 💎 #

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve thought that Eyes Without a Face by Billy Idol was this beautiful, devastating song, and when I first saw ~some-eyes-see-you by @knights, the song immediately came to mind and I knew I wanted to feature this project here. It has nothing to do with Billy Idol, but was inspired by David Shrigley‘s postcard print and passages from John Cage’s “Diary: How to Improve the World (You Will Only Make Matters Worse),” which as a writer I love just as much as my first impression.

~inatom, by @subashchandrabose2003 is one of the coolest apps I’ve seen in a while, which combines the fine details of molecular structure with virtual reality to see a fully realized atomic structure!

🇵🇸 For my friends keeping the protest of the genocidal campaign against Palestine at the forefront, last month ~divest-facct was created to share a both printable, and screen readable e-zine dedicated to curating references and resources around divesting from war profiteering tech companies.

~wild-hydra by @n.hieda and @flordefuego takes randomized css declarations and creates original patterns using Hydra and would be pretty cool to remix and experiment with imho.

Moving to a more digital, less fumbling through your purse/bag crap to find things lifestyle? Couldn’t be me, but @webparkdev has you covered with ~sepia-lunar-lock which allows you to generate digital loyalty cards from your favorite shops on your phone.

Do you love beta testing and creating digital art? ~srcsnap, by @LingDong- is currently looking for testers to try out screenshot-driven version tracking.

This is going to be your new favorite game, is all I’m going to say about ~numbup by @mattdsantos.

Although, fans of Flappy Bird (rip) and Space Invaders might save that title for ~marshy-lavish-fang by @nikmcfly9, which combines two classic arcade style games into one game that I am absolutely horrible at, lol

~homicidio-doloso-zmg by @kevinrobertotorresruiz maps out the number of homicides by county in Guadalajara from 2014-2018, using OpenStreetMap.

During the hotter months, the last thing I want to do is come up with another freaking dinner idea, that’s why apps like ~magical-gold-wavelength come in so handy! Created by @trangthule for a Twilio Challenge, this app takes your meal requests from Whatsapp, and sends you back a meal plan with pictures and links!

If the last few years have taught me anything, it’s to drink more water, only leave slightly deranged but effusively supportive comments on the posts of people you actually know, and that reading comprehension and media literacy is absolutely crucial these days! @celinenguyen highlights the latter in ~anessayonconspiracytheories2024 which you’ll be better for reading, I promise.

~the-national-bouquet by @mapsmania shares a digitized version of the “Our National Bouquet” map, created by the United States Flower Map Co. in 1911. Tag yourself! I’m “Washington - Rhododendron.” 💐

~porchfest came and went to and from Rutherford, New Jersey last month. If you’re unfamiliar with the event, porchfests are informal gatherings of local musicians, hosted on the porches and patios of local residents and establishments. They don’t have to be named “Porchfest” either, in my local community, it‘s called “Make Music Day” and happens on summer solstice. So now you know!

~tools2heal by @teekundu started out as a health poem for Taper zine but became a calming meditation on self care. Check it out!

Rainbow Connection 🌈 #

Last month’s Community Code Jam prompt, in honor of Pride month—but also in honor of rainbows—was “rainbows.” In order to properly assess the community’s contributions, I turned to an expert, Jesse von Doom, Director of Rainbows, for his take.

~rainbow-bounce and ~eight-stripes are my favorites. I like eight-stripes because it pays homage to a classic design and designer, and rainbow-bounce because I like going from screensavers to rainbows. But if I had to pick one, I’d go eight-stripes — while it's simpler I like the callback to another designer so it feels like rainbows spanning time.” 🌈

If you’re like me, then you’re raising a teenager in the Midwest and dying for any hint of queer culture, then you’ve probably latched onto Chappell Roan like the refreshing lifesaver she is. Not only has she seen a meteoric rise in popularity this summer, but she’s officially cemented her icon status with our favorite milestone: her very own Heardle app. ✨ Test your sonic knowledge with this app, created by @solisengineer and dance it out, you’re hot to go!
