August 2024 on Glitch: Award winning

Back in August, I felt like it would never end. The stifling heat, the lack of breeze, the sleepy energy of the days and the overall feeling of pointlessness—for a cold weather person such as myself, it’s a month best skipped. However, for summer people, especially ones with August birthdays, I know firsthand how it can feel like a triumphant final fling in the face of back to school and back to work. So for those of you who feel and felt the magic of August, I salute you. đŸ«Ą

Okay, a couple of things did happen in August. First, Sue Smith began releasing these awesome tutorial videos for creating with Glitch and Fastly.

And we also picked out the theme for September’s Glitch Community Code Jam. Drumroll please, just kidding, it’s been out for over a week at this point so you all probably know that the theme this month is “maps”! Do you have an idea for a future code jam theme? I’d love to hear it!

August Ascending Projects 🌙 Get on their level #

Do not be deceived by the cuteness of the emoji in the header image above, because within the scene of ~subdue-them, created by @wh0, lies a game so sneakily clever that you will spend way more time than is healthy or normal trying to outsmart this cute game. Be warned!

~3d-icon-maouh by @maousabu6262 is the perfect project if you’ve been wanting to make a virtual avatar.

~navy-kindly-promotion by @emil.boucard is a fun, browser-based game that combines a lot of your fave web technologies into a brilliantly simple game.

Kamala Hive activate 🌮 #

A tabby cat with white paws and white jaws lies on a fluffy white blanket and stares directly at camera.

~catsforkamala by prolific meme generator creator 👑 @derekahmedzai finally allows you to share your furry friends’ political preferences.

~walz-holding-vinyl created by ~kamala-holding-vinyls creator, @getmitchquick just adds to the list of delightful things about Tim Walz.

~timwalzfixedyourbicycle.com by @boogah was influenced by Mat Honan’s “Barack Obama Is Your New Bicycle” and enjoyed a viral moment last month!

~doug-holding-vinyls also by @getmitchquick gives us all a chance to reminisce about the 80s and young Clash lover, Doug Emhoff.

~3dnd-v4 by @emmettbaber and @laurenmoorejm might appear to be a cute little virtual tabletop (vtt) game, but if you look closer, you’ll realize that you can remix this project and add your own spin to the world according to the creators’ grand plans! mwhahahaha!

~hand-shader-control by @Betx9 combines beautiful gradient colors with interactive hand tracking, enable your camera to give it a try and hypnotize yourself. đŸ˜”â€đŸ’«

~hexee by @MilesWK is one of my personal favorites from August because it helped me out so much with a huge project, but keep it handy because it helps you find hex color codes quickly!

~helpful-sponge-carpenter by @tejeshveerla25 is a beautifully designed, multi-player bingo game, so grab some pals to play!

I’ve been sitting here for way too long, trying to find the words to describe ~artfight-worm2. It kind of reminds me of the time that I found out I was pregnant with my daughter, and it wasn’t an ideal situation but I tried to plan for the absolute best. A lot of things came apart in the end, but I’m a problem solver so I was constantly looking for ways to fix them and did a lot of research on early childhood development so that my daughter wouldn’t suffer from having an unenthusiastic and ill prepared mother, and then when she finally started playing with toys, her absolute favorite was a makeshift cat toy composed of a used water bottle filled with very crinkly plastic Halloween wrapping paper. She took that thing everywhere and absolutely cronched on it, making the most horrific slobbery crunching sounds. I can’t even remember the cat’s name now.

~pixel-view by @mapsmania is a fun game where you guess the location based on the single clue of a pixelated image.

Lastly, I was stoked to see ~music-morsels on @notwaldorf’s blog because I’m such a huge fan of her work. If you are a music fan, struggling to read music, or just curious, definitely check out ~music-morsels!!

Glitch Community draws inspiration from last month’s code jam ✍ #

In August, the Glitch Community Code Jam theme was “just draw” which resulted in some very interesting submissions!

~draw-an-owl by @jennschiffer levels up your drawing skills in a very satisfying and humorous way.

~sticky-scribbles by @martymcguire lets you create an SVG suitable for pen plotting with simple scribbles and text with Hershey fonts!

Featured as an App of the Week, ~particle-draw by @fabianmoronzirfas grows as you draw, try it out!

Football fans! ~fantasy-draft-lottery by @sobrien26 sets your fantasy league’s draft order via a lottery drawing and then crafts some beautiful artwork that is your fantasy football team from the results, ta-da!

See all of the submissions for August’s prompt.

It’s not everyday that a Glitch project wins both the highest honor available in the Girl Scouts organization and gets recognition from an entire state senate. Many congrats go out to Anushka Kollengode for her website encouraging folks to take action on the climate crisis now!
